With the amount of stuff going on the world of much greater importance, it's a
valid question, from myself a couple of years ago included, why I take any part in
the politics of my university. The simple answer is that I got lumbered with it. I
like my university, but in many respects I think it's crap. I'm not the only one
who concurs, but I'm one of the few people willing to actually get off their arse and
do something about it. I have no respect for people who constantly whinge and moan
about things which they can help change if they put a bit of effort in, so I ended
up taking on various posts around the university. Most of them no one else wanted,
let alone applied for. It's ironic really, considering I was never given any
position of responsibility whilst at the schools i went to, although that was mainly
because i didn't play rugby or cricket, and my mother wasn't shagging the headmaster
or one of the governors.
I've been here for 3 years now and have so far held the positions of:
Year Rep (3 times) - the rep students in my year's degree scheme
Department Rep - the student rep for the 600 students in my department
School Convenor - the head student rep for several thousand science students
I've also been elected to various committees during my time here including the
computer services management committee and the institutional audit committee.
I guess now i've got into it I kind of enjoy it, but just like politics in the
big wide world it's pretty much a complete farce, almost comical at times.
