Poi is an ancient Maori thing, where they take balls on string and spin them around themselves. As a crazy western adaptation, people had the cunning idea to take
it to the next level and use big flaming wicks on the end of chains, and thus firechains were born.
Sounds pretty extreme i know, especially when i start wrapping big burning balls of kevlar around my nuts purposely, but when i saw it being done for the first time
I basically thought "hell fucking yes!" and made myself a practice set out of tennis balls and string a couple of days later. After a couple of months of learning
off the Internet I moved onto a small fire set, 6 months later a larger set and then recently I've started using some huge/really heavy homemade ones. It really is
pretty dangerous, but when you practice everyday for an hour the risk is greatly reduced. My new huge set, whilst being huge and with a very large flame which will
burn you if you stop spinning for more than a few seconds are actually a lot safer than smaller ones, because i designed them with no metal parts around the wick -
the wicks remain cool (you can catch them and not burn yourself if you let go within a second) and are more bouncy than tennis balls.
The London fire performing community is really cool, I've met dozens of lovely, welcoming and non egotistical people. Last summer (2003) I spent many Sundays
sitting and spinning in Clapham common with up to 100 others. I also got back into free parties with them, and even had a seaside trip! It's possibly the best hobby
I've ever had, loads of people out on warm summer evenings doing what we love, and oooh the fire! I guess the best way to describe what I do is in pictures, of
which there are *tonnes* on my photos site. A few of them are linked to below.
